On a Sunday morning, if you sit in church under solid teaching of the Scriptures, hearing preaching faithful to the word of God, you are blessed. Now, what should you do with what you hear?
The letter to the Hebrews exhorts his readers (Heb. 2:1), “For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.”
Listen to the Lord! Do not ignore God's word! The writer says, “Pay much closer attention to what you have heard!”, “Give the more earnest heed to the things that you heard!”, “Hold on all the more firmly to the truths you have heard!”, “Give your full attention to what you were told!”
Why should we listen when God's word is being preached? At the start of this letter, Jesus Christ is presented as God's own Son, speaking God's Word, bearing God's glory, and representing God's very nature (Heb. 1:1-4). Hence, the Bible was written to exhort and encourage us to enduring, persevering faith in Jesus Christ (Rom. 15:4; 1 Cor. 10:11); listening to preaching nurtures that faith.
What will happen if we are not attentive to Scriptural teaching about Christ? What will happen if we do not heed to the Word of the Lord regarding His Son? The writer tells us that we will drift away from them, we will let these truths slip away from us, and we will be carried away to other things. How shall we listen to the preaching of the word? When asked “What is required of those that hear the word preached?”, those trained in the Westminster Larger Catechism were taught to respond, “It is required of those that hear the word preached, that they attend upon it with diligence, preparation, and prayer; examine: What they hear by the scriptures; receive the truth with faith, love, meekness, and readiness of mind, as the word of God; meditate, and confer of it; hide it in their hearts, and bring forth the fruit of it in their lives.”This coming Sunday, we will have the wonderful opportunity to receive grace through hearing God's word. What shall we do? Let us listen to the teaching of the Lord! Let us grow in our knowledge of God! Let us strengthen our faith in Christ!
