Praying with the View of God’s Holiness (Part 1)

2 Chronicles 7:14-15 shows us the importance of knowing God and our response before Him as we come to Him in prayer. The text also shows us the heart of Solomon as he serves the Lord at the beginning of his kingship. We also see the wisdom of his leadership, his love for his people, and his desire for each one to walk in accordance to God’s will so that they may honor God and be blessed.

It is important for us to learn from the life of Solomon and apply the truths revealed through his life, for our daily living at the present time.

A Humble People Before God

The Lord was attentive to Solomon’s prayer. All of his petitions before God were answered, and this is the reason why people proclaim, “His lovingkindness is everlasting” (2 Chr. 7: 3, 6). We can attest that this is true even now, which should result in worship, praise, and fullness of thanksgiving.

Solomon knew that his people will not always obey God. Solomon pleads that, if they sin and turn away from God, He would hear and and forgive them. Here we can see Solomon's great leadership, manifested in his compassion for his people, interceding for them.

This is a reminder for church leaders to pray that God moves in the lives of our people. The congregation must also commit themselves to pray for the leaders of the church, asking God that they may continue to walk in righteousness and in humility before the Lord.

Solomon already knows that God’s people will sin against Him in time, so Solomon now pleads before God. Not only that, Solomon also knows how they ought to respond before God. They are to pray, acknowledge God (i.e., confess His name), and turn away from their sins.

We all sin, and we all need to respond every time we sin this way: to come before God in prayer, acknowledge Him for who He is—that He is God, He is Holy and is against all our iniquities.

Have you come to the Lord with that kind of heart?
